15 Years Ago

15 YEARS AGO, I felt optimistic, as a rather eventful year came to an end.

My divorce had been final for several months. Gone with the marriage was the house, sold at a loss. Still, I had a nice apartment and a good job in Fayetteville, Ark. Gwen had moved in with me early in the year and she had found work.

We were building a circle of friends around role-playing games, especially vampire Live Action Role-Play in White Wolf's World of Darkness. We had run a successful LARP at a friend's house, and it looked like we were getting together to start a chapter of The Camarilla, the newly established fan club/LARP society officially sanctioned by White Wolf.

My job wasn't using my Journalism degree I had earned in the previous year, but it was steady work and paid fairly well, at the Mexican Original plant -- owned by Tyson foods, it made tortilla products including chips and taco shells, and was a major supplier to Taco Bell. I had just gotten a minor promotion to a department that was expanding into second shift (I had been a second-shift worker because it paid better and it allowed me to go to college during the day) and since I needed to get better caught up on my bills, I was going to volunteer for some overtime in January.

But first, though, I had to visit the doctor on Jan. 2...
